Bio

Renny Hyde is a graduate student at the University of Illinois Chicago studying industrial design. Their design research focuses on creating electronic artifacts which encourage holistic interpersonal and ecological interaction.

They graduated with a bachelor of science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in computer engineering, music technology, and physics. During their time at tech they developed skills in embedded systems engineering and signal processing, and have used these skills in numerous personal and academic projects. They are passionate about audio and computing software + hardware.

As an undergraduate researcher in the Creative Music Technology Lab (CMTL) they applied advanced computer engineering and signal processing techniques to create instruments, tools, and systems for music performance. Working with Dr. Alexandria Smith, Renny created an interactive audio installation as part of the 'Resilient Earth' exhibit for Science Gallery Atlanta, running from September 14 until April 30th, 2024. Their research focuses on creating embedded systems for music performance and installations, acting as a bridge between the natural and digital worlds.

Renny served two years as the General Manager of WREK Atlanta 91.1FM, Georgia Tech's student-run radio station. An Atlanta treasure since 1968, WREK covers all of Atlanta with 100,000 Watts of quality, diverse programming. Renny is the founder and former-host of 100 wreks, WREK's weekly hyperpop show. 100 wreks has been praised by Atlanta Magazine, saying

"I would never seek out the genre hyperpop on my own, but I’ve happily submitted to an hour of it on WREK. As the cohosts of 100 wreks gushingly compared two different artists’ euphoric vocals—one of whom, it turned out, was actually a programmed synth—I felt as giddy as if I’d been a lifelong acolyte of hyperpop."

As well as an engineer, Renny is also an artist. They create computer music as pocket noise, and DJ under the alias DJ Snootles. They are also a graphic designer, designing posters and merch for WREK Atlanta, among other facets of the Atlanta DIY music community.

Along with their roommates, they founded The Fortress, a house venue bringing experimental and DIY music to the Georgia Tech community.
